10 Questions You're Guaranteed to be Asked in a Sorority Interview AND the Best Way to Answer!

Practice makes perfect! Here are 10 questions you’re going to be asked during rush and some
tips on how to answer them.

“Tell us about yourself”

This is your elevator pitch’s time to shine so practice beforehand! Say your name, where you’re from, what you’re studying, and any interests or hobbies you have. Bonus points if you can integrate your leadership, teamwork, or community involvement!

The goal of this question is to:

1. Give your interviewer an overview of you and if you’d fit into their sorority overall.
2. Provide options for your interviewer to connect with you on or ask further questions about.

Provide options for your interviewer to connect with you on or ask further questions about.

“Are you excited for college? How has move in been? Which dorm are you in?”

Chances are you’ll be asked all three, all at once so be prepared. A great way to handle these questions is to answer the question and follow with a reason.

For example, the following conversation is dry and choppy:

“So are you excited for college? How has move in been? Which dorm are you in?"

“Yes! It’s been great so far and I’m in Green”

Whereas the next conversation provides reasoning:

“So are you excited for college? How has move in been? Which dorm are you in?"

“Yeah I’m so excited, I’ve been counting down the days to move in! I’m in Green which is great because no one from my school came here so I’ve been meeting a lot of people
there!”

The second conversation provided different talking points the interviewer can respond to, showed off your personality, and highlighted points that will make you stand out; ultimately making the interviewer remember you.

Show off your personality while being a combination of happy,
energetic, uplifting, and funny.

“How’s rush been so far?”

This question is asked to see if you are an overall positive person, despite going through an extremely stressful and tiring process. Answer truthfully but do your best to be positive. And it’s totally okay to answer with light sarcasm if that is more your vibe too!

“It’s been great. I've loved everyone I’ve met so far!”
“Loving every second of it!” (note the sarcasm)

Take this opportunity to show off your personality while being a combination of happy, energetic, uplifting, and funny. It will improve your conversation and your interviewer will associate you with positive connotations as a result!

“Why are you interested in joining our sorority?”

Be genuine! To prepare for this question, ask yourself, ‘Why do I want to join a sorority?’ There can be many reasons in general which you should answer with but make sure you find reasons for that specific chapter!

“I’ve always wanted to join a sorority. I’ve always had such close girlfriends and I’m excited to meet everyone here and make new ones! But for Kappa Phi Theta specifically, I met Rachel who spoke so highly of it and really sold it for me!”

Think of any similar values or missions that you and the sorority share, any people you have met that made you want to join that house, or any traditions or events you’ve heard that you would love to participate in if you receive a bid! Emphasize that you have a specific draw to that sorority!

Make sure you find reasons for that specific chapter!

“How would you contribute to the sorority?”

Chances are you’ll be asked all three, all at once so be prepared. A great way to handle these questions is to answer the question and follow with a reason.

“How would you contribute to the sorority?”

It’s important to have an idea of what role you would be interested in learning about - and potentially doing - if you joined the sorority. This shows that you did research beforehand, know yourself and your capabilities, while providing an opportunity for you to share your passions or highlight your leadership experience.

There are many roles that can differ between each sorority and chapter but overall they stem from the following positions: President, Academic Excellence, Finance Chair, Social Chair, Rush Chair, and many more.

President: “I’ve always naturally gravitated towards leadership roles and am very comfortable overseeing the bigger picture. I love working with people and understand how to create a positive environment while ensuring everyone is on task”

Academic Excellence: “I’ve always loved school, from buying my school supplies, to keeping up with my agenda, to test prep. I feel as though I’d be a great asset to my sisters to make sure we are all doing well!”

Finance Chair: “I’ve always been great with math and budgets and feel as though I’d do great as finance chair. It aligns with my future career goals so I’m excited to better prepare myself for my future while supporting the house!”

Social Chair: “I’m always looking for ways to see my friends in fun and new ways so I’m definitely interested in social chair! While many call me ‘the life of the party’ I’m also very organized and can ensure we have a full and balanced social calendar!”

Rush Chair: “I love meeting new people and ensuring that they feel comfortable and welcomed. I already love this sorority and can’t wait to show it off to the future PNMs (potential new members)!”

Suggest whatever role you feel the most drawn to and supplement as to why! Also, feel free to mention any roles not on this list, whatever you like!

“What leadership experience do you have?”

This question is used to gauge a few things; what does leadership mean to you, how confident you are in a leadership role, and how likely are you to contribute - in a leadership role or not - to this chapter. You can answer this question with anything from athletics, jobs, class projects, etc.

Make sure to explain the situation and how you displayed leadership as well as explain how these experiences have prepared you to contribute as a leader in the sorority.

“What does sisterhood mean to you?”

Share your understanding of sisterhood as a supportive and empowering bond and emphasize the value of trust, loyalty, and lifelong friendships. You can elaborate by discussing how you would foster a strong sisterhood by actively participating, being there for your sisters, and promoting a sense of belonging.

This is a great time to mention specific things you are excited to participate in once you join the sorority such as... “I can’t wait to get ready with everyone before invites” or “My sister and her sorority would get together every Monday night and watch The Bachelor and I’ve always wanted to do that” or “I’ve seen so many videos on TikTok of everyone running home on bid day and I’m
so excited!”

Your interviewer will be excited to hear what aspect of sisterhood you are specifically excited about and will most likely share their experience or reasons why they love the sisterhood.

“What are your career or academic goals, and how do you see our sorority supporting them?”

Share your aspirations and how you envision your academic or career path and discuss how the sorority's resources, networking opportunities, and mentorship programs align with your goals. If
you don’t know specifically how the sorority will help you - feel free to ask! The interierwer will appreciate your candidacy and drive for success.

While each sorority has different resources, one aspect that all sororities have in common is their extensive network of sisters. Show enthusiasm for leveraging the sorority's connections to enhance your personal and professional development.

“How would you contribute to our philanthropic efforts?”

It’s great if you personally connect with the sororities philanthropy, and if so, make sure to mention that, but chances are there will be a few that you don’t fully connect with which is totally ok!

If that’s the case, you can demonstrate your interest in giving back to the community as a whole by discussing any previous volunteer experiences or involvement in charitable activities. If you can connect personally, highlight your passion for the sorority's philanthropic causes and share ideas on how you could actively contribute to fundraising, awareness campaigns, or volunteering initiatives.

“Do you have any questions for us?”

Make sure to prepare a few questions to show your interest and engagement! I would suggest having a few serious questions such as “What made you choose this sorority?” as well as a few simpler and light hearted questions such as “What’s your favorite event that you participate in each year?” or “Did you live in the house and if so, how did you like it?”. This will emphasize your genuine desire to learn more about the chapter and ensure there aren't any awkward points in your conversation!

Overall, remember to be authentic, positive, and enthusiastic throughout rush. It can be a long and stressful experience for everyone but by going in feeling confident and prepared you will do great! Good luck!
