Things We Wish We Knew Before Going To Uni

Whether you’ve just graduated or are easing into your first semester of university, there are things we all wish we knew before we started. As we celebrate the launch of our partnership with Unidays (sign up and get 10% off AU & NZ bbz), we look back at the sh*t we wish we knew before and during university.

1. DON’T SIGN UP FOR A 9AM CLASS.

Be real with yourself, are you really going to wake up at the crack of dawn just to attend a 2 hour lecture? Doubt it. Don’t put yourself through the hell that is a 9am class unless it’s compulsory.

2. The buddy system works. Make a buddy in every class so in case you need to miss it they sign you in and you owe them a free pass to get signed off #TeamWorkMakesTheDreamWork

3. Keep your square at home.

It’s easy to go crazy and PayPass your savings away in a stress-fuelled episode so only carry cash you to uni. Science (aka my logic) has proven that you’re less inclined to spend cash because you can physically see it decrease.

4. Be prepared to work in something completely unrelated to your degree, its funny where life takes us.

5. Get social.

University sucks a whole lot less when your social life is lit. Make sure it’s not too lit though, you don’t want your uni dreams to go up in flames.

6. Take a break.

Taking a break while you have a pile of things to do sounds counter productive but your body needs to refresh. Forcing yourself to look at notes won’t help them sink in faster and does more harm than good.

  1. Microwave etiquette is a totes a thing and everyone will side-eye you if you don’t abide by the socially accepted codes of conduct.
  • Don’t microwave tuna. Just. Don’t.
  • Get your timing right. Nobody will thank you for holding up the line because you can’t heat up your leftovers properly.
  • Clean up after yourself.
  • Use common sense. Don’t microwave sandwiches, don’t put food in the microwave without covering it properly, etc. In other words, don’t put anything in your microwave that you wouldn’t put in your own microwave.

  1. Talk to your tutors

They’re there to give you a hand so don’t be scared to send them an email and ask them to clarify things or visit them during their consultation hours. They’re seasoned professionals and they’ve heard every question under the sun so if you think you have a stupid question it’s guaranteed that they’ve heard it at already at least five times this semester. You’re not the only one.
